Octoberfest in Hermann with Friends

It is October and here in Hermann it is always the month with the most tourists. The town is at its best for putting on a good time for so many visitors that come to this historically German town. There are many events, special themes at the wineries, shops and restaurants all month.

Jennifer and Bryan are both retired police officers and I have hiked with Jennifer many times, as we are both in the OTSHAB (Ozark trail section hikers and backpackers) group. Jen has also just returned from completing the entire Appalachian Trail, (2162 miles.) Impressively, deciding almost on the spur of the moment to do it as a retirement present to herself!

As it turns out they were both also going to the RUSH concert in St. Louis the same night as us, so it was perfect for them to come and spend a few days afterward in Hermann as that would put the visit over the weekend.

RUSH:

The line at the RUSH show for merchandise before the doors opened was LONG!

Xanadu opening

The end... probably the best I have ever heard the songs played live.
Anika was superb.
A rare moment, one funny mistake from Alex at the beginning of 2112. You could see the Anika and Geddy laugh 🤣

Thanks for coming and spending such a great few days with us.

Glamping at Grand Lake in Oklahoma + Bonus Day at Silver Dollar City. Oct 15-20.

Our friends, Cory and Jen have been asking us to go with them to this RV Glamping Resort in Oklahoma. It is on Grand Lake, near the town of Grove Oklahoma. About an hour south of Joplin Missouri. It is called the Regatta On Grand.

It is a gated RV resort that offers nice flat concrete sites with gazebos, outdoor furniture, fireplace and BBQ grilles. The staff is particularly attentive, checking on you, a few times per day to make sure you have what you need and best of all they bring margaritas, right to your site, every night around 5 pm!

What could be better for a few days away to relax and chat with friends.

Thursday:

The weather was promising to be "variable", meaning it was going to get cold for the first time this Fall. Temperatures for the next couple of days were going to be in the low 40's at night with some strong winds.

Cory and Jen have their new Airstream Basecamp

With the addition of Gandalf "The White," the pull down to Oklahoma was no problem at all.

We got side by side sites

We arrived around 2:30 pm and got all settled and made a charcuterie for lunch. Our site host had already brought us our first drink. The first one is a mocktail, but they promised to start the margaritas later in the afternoon

Jen had packed an excellent choice for Sour Beer and she was kind enough to share. As a matter of fact, there was more alcohol on hand that food! 🤣

We did very little for the remainder of the afternoon, but sit, eat, drink and chat.

As the sunset the clouds and wind arrived.

We decided to check out the local Mexican Restaurant. Lupe's. We had been told by our camp hostess, that while her last visit was mixed, she felt that it was the best choice in town. We would agree. It was "quirky" but everyone was very nice and the food was great.

Friday:
The temperature had fallen overnight. The windows open before bed were quickly closed in the morning and the fireplace was engaged to take the chill out of the air in the RV.
The sunrise over the lake was excellent.

The weather meant morning coffee was a bundled up affair.

We had divided up the cooking duties before arriving, each of us would do a breakfast and a dinner, then making lunches and other snacks a hodgepodge of our combined favorites.
Jen and Cory did the first breakfast of French Toast and sausage. It was delicious.

Much better to have breakfast inside, where it was warm.

The rest of the morning consisted of chatting under the gazebo with a considerable amount of layers on, but a few more cocktails made it much more manageable.
Around lunch time we decided to try the local sports bar. Cory had found a place called the Drunken Rooster at the main dock area in downtown Grove.

It was open and very busy, also very understaffed, but the staff was cheerful and we were in no hurry so all was good. When the food arrived it was much better than we had anticipated for "bar" food. In fact, I would have no problem  recommending this place to anyone. I am sure during the Summer months, this place is packed

View out the window of the dock and lack

We then walked around the town of Gove, did some window shopping and walking off that lunch, before returning to the Regatta. Perhaps the only drawback to the RV site was how close it was to such a major road, but the sunset was nice and after returning we settled in to wait for our margaritas.

I am not sure how we found room for dinner, but it was our scheduled night to cook and we had planned steak filet, fettuccine and fruit. We must have found room as it was so good I forgot to take a picture while the plate looked good! 🤣

The campsite will also bring you as much firewood as you need, so after dinner we managed to waddle our way out to the patio for a big fire.

Saturday

Sunrise again was a great view from our site.

The Gazebo lights at dawn

Saturday was the day we had hoped for. The weather front had broken during the night and this morning was clear and much warmer. I made a quiche for breakfast and we had multiple cups of coffee.

We took a walk around the rest of the RV resort and marveled at some of the full time sites and the structures that were built around the owners RV's

Down to the waters edge and a view across the lake

Today was a relaxing day with just more sitting and talking and of course some drinking. Jen made an excellent Chili for dinner and we had another great fire.  The warmer temps made it much easier to site outside and relax

Sunday:
Sunday morning's sunrise

After breakfast we started to think about getting packed up. Doing all the chores that need to get done to move the RV. Cory and Jen had really loved the way their Basecamp had worked out this weekend as they get more and more used to it.

One more view of Grand Lake and our patio before heading out. We had a great time here. This has been the second real getaway we have had in as many month and each of these have really felt like a true relaxing getaway. Thanks Cory and Jen. 💗

Bonus Trip: Branson and Silver Dollar City:
Somehow I knew that it would not be possible to come so close to SDC and not have Vicky want to go.🤣
Actually I like going too. I don't ride roller coasters but Vicky loves them and we both like all the other attractions at the Park, so I was happy to plan an extra couple of days there.
I booked us into the SDC RV campground, which is only a few miles from the Park and they have a shuttle that will take you to and from the Park, several times per day.

Went out for a fun night at one of our favorites in Branson- Mel's Hard Luck Diner

Next day, it was off to Silver Dollar City.

The Park was all dressed up for Halloween.

We had thought that it being a Monday, the Park might be a bit less crowded. We were wrong....

Vicky rode the roller coasters many times and we had a really nice day walking around and looking at the many stands of local crafts.

No trip is complete without a funnel cake

Next day we finally had to head home, but we had a great time this week, just relaxing with friends and then spending the day on our own in the Park. Thanks to Cory, Jen and Vicky for making this a fantastic getaway
