Tahoe Rim Trail Recommendations

For every major trip I try to make a list of recommended places that I have visited or to mentions establishments and people that met or exceeded my expectations. You can read in the blog why they did so or I might mention them again below:

Heavenly Village, South Lake Tahoe
Basecamp Pizza

  • Thai Curry Pizza

California Burger Company.

  • Shake, Rattle, Roll- adult milkshake
  • Live Music

Azul Latin Kitchen

Honorable Mentions
Super Tacos on Cedar Ave.- We heard they were really good but everytime we went there they were closed and the one time we called ahead they were just closing because they had no customers waiting.... strange business model but if you catch them they are said to be excellent!
Naked Fish- Sushi, heard great things just ran out of time

Econolodge on Hwy 50
Amy and Andrew. Amy especially went out of her way to help us sort out rooms and our luggage when our plans changed

Mellow Mountain Hostel- if hostels are you thing (bunk beds and EDM music) then this is your jam. It is the best price per person in town for a bunk and it is run by some insanely helpful and laid back people.

Raley's Food Market
Really good food market with excellent pricing (there is a Whole Foods going in just west of Heavenly Village that should be open soon).

Starbucks- Both Starbucks are good with very nice and funny staff.

Tahoe Sports Limited- Right next to Raley's good for fuel canisters and anything you might have forgotten

Trail Angels: South Lake Tahoe
This list is posted at Echo Lake and it is a great bunch that all answered when we called.

Tahoe City

America's Best Value Inn- Tahoe City-
maybe lower prices in town, but a clean room and you can send a package, although the street address for the hotel will not appear to be correct to any post office's computer in the US, you just have to tell them to send it anyway, it will get there!

Alpineglow Sports:
full service high end sporting goods store, get fuel canisters and they have a hiker box

Rosie's Cafe- Great breakfasts

Pioneer Cocktail Club and Kitchen- Strong drinks and good appetizers

Honorable Mentions- not enough time.
Fat Cat Bar and Grille- Burgers
The Blue Agave- Good Mexican, right next to ABVI, you get a discount
Tahoe Tap House- Live Music

Two caveats to the Tahoe area-
There is no good native beer in the Tahoe area and the pit toilets at all the trailheads along major roadways are the most foul smelling of any I have ever encountered.
Speaking of trailheads. The parks service has not done themselves any favors by not maintaining the water spigots, toilets that are currently in place or adding new ones around Lake Tahoe. If you check the Tahoe Rim Trail Association website, which I do recommend and that you also join the organization if you plan to hike the trail, you will find a history of broken pipes, closed facilities with little or no update or explanation. You might expect it on the California side, but this is on the Nevada side as well.

A major thank you to Gary our Uber driver the last few days of our trip. I can't give out his contact number here, but if you are in SLT and need an Uber, contact me and I will pass it along.

When in RENO:
Brew tour:

Pigeon Head Brewing
IMBIB Brewery
Lead Dog Brewery
The Depot Craft Brewery and Distillery- also great!! food
